We rarely talk about left-wing artists on the podcast, but when we do, it’s usually Brian De Palma, who dramatized the conflicts in America more thoroughly & imaginatively than any other director. Today, I bring you a conversation with my friend & fellow PoMoCon John Presnall, to show you what conservatives today could learn from De Palm, now that we all share his fear of the deep state.
Here’s the story of The Fury: Kirk Douglas is a spy in the Middle East during the Cold War, working for an agency more secretive than the CIA. His son, who has special powers, a super-brain, is abducted by one of his colleagues to be experimented upon & become a weapon. A girl in Chicago discovers she has similar powers & is recruited to help the spy find his son. A confrontation ensues, & horror. This is Brian De Palma’s story about the deep state, about the idealism of education (brain powers) & globalization (educating American students about the UN) turning into espionage, experiments on people, & deadly violence. At the point America runs the world, the family is most endangered.
