So I talked to my friend & fellow PoMoCon John Presnall about Brian De Palma again, whose warnings about the moral-psychological dangers to liberalism are proving more inspired every year! This time, horror—Carrie, the 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel, which got two surprising Oscar nominations for the actresses. The previous De Palma horror we discussed, The Fury, was about foreign affairs, the Cold War, science & education; this one is about domestic affairs, about ordinary middle class Americans in suburbia—or rather, their kids, preparing for adulthood. High-school’s over, prom’s coming up, & the future of the nation somehow doesn’t seem rosy… Another way of looking at it is, a corrupt culture & a stolen election lead to crazy stuff!
Finally, I should add a note of thanks: The podcast editing is courtesy of our Hillsdale intern, Lauren Scott, who’s been doing this for us over the summer with good cheer & aplomb!
