I’m doing a series on old Christmas movies, their 90s remake, & what we might learn now. This will make for pleasant holiday viewings! Here’s my first essay over at the Acton blog, on The Bishop’s Wife, a wonderful Cary Grant picture from 1947. Upcoming: Jimmy Stewart & Margaret Sullavan in Ernst Lubitsch’s The shop around the corner, Barbara Stanwyck & Sidney Greenstreet in Christmas in Connecticut, & of course, the most famous of them all, Miracle on 34th Street starring Edmund Gwenn as Kris Kringle, with Maureen O’Hara & Natalie Wood.
Here’s the trailer joke about not making a trailer for the movie—this was apparently funny in 1947, but now it’s just pleasant to look at these wonderful actors.
Here’s a trailer for the Penny Marshall remake starring Denzel & Whitney Houston.
Wonderful soundtrack, some joyous gospel numbers, by the way, also all available on youtube!
I've gotta see that version with Denzel and Whitney Houston now! Didn't know about it
