Hello, friends, here’s a discussion for the weekend—I talked to my friend Justin Lee & his friend Dave Woods about Arthurian tales & their importance nowadays. They teach literature & love this movie, so we got together to reflect on what modern artists can do with stories, when they have to reconcile contradictions—medieval honor & modern skepticism, aristocracy & democracy, the once proud Christian faith & the way it is now struggling… We like the movie, we like the writer-director, this is something that many young people would like, but also something for very thoughtful college professors & grad students who like to think about the complexity of storytelling. Inasmuch as it rewards thoughtful interest in the poem itself through reinterpretation, the movie might even bring together liberals & conservatives attracted to different aspects of it.

Great work, gents! The film is a bit confusing on first viewing, so if you've seen it and were confused like myself, you might go right to the summary of the action at about 28 or 29.
