Friday Night Lights is a TV show and a vibe that is greatly missed, just as our favorite commentator on the show Peter Lawler is missed. Carl also had some great posts about FNL; I have a question for him and the rest of the POMOCON crowd on this fun first weekend of College football.
Does FNL live on through Dr. Pepper “Fansville” commercials?
These goofy commercials make light of the patriotism, thumos, and passion that surround the football season, in a series of commercials that somewhat connect and build on each other. The characters are doggedly loyal to one of two teams: either “tech” or “state,” in a devotion that dominates there lives in Fansville.
The first commercials for “season 5” came out yesterday, and I couldn’t help but think… this is basically a riff on Friday Night Lights Season 4. The commercials make light of the real life changes going on to the NCAA in the form of super-conferences like the expanded SEC (with Texas and OU) and expanded Big 10 (with USC and UCLA). A student/athlete who had been part of the “tech” territory in Fansville is now part of the “state” territory, and faces a dilemma of whether now to support “state” inspite of his past loyalty.
In Season 4 of FNL, we found out there is an East and West Dillon High for the first time. And as it so happens the prodigy running back, Luke Cafferty, must go to East Dillon along with Coach Taylor, despite his wishes.
How can fictional characters and stories “live” in other fictional stories, a philosopher might ask? Saul Kripke has written some pretty great stuff on fictional reference, using characters such as Sherlock Holmes as his examples. I’m pretty sold on what Kripke says in his book Reference and Existence; I think he figured it out, but it’s still a mysterious phenomenon.
Life imitates art- and art imitates art, in this case! Fun stuff
Never heard of it.
FNL was good -- I'll wait before I say anything comparable about these commercials; perhaps the jokes inspire thoughts comparable to yours in the audience...
