Dear readers of PoMoCon, Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you’ll all have a lovely time & I recommend by way of fitting entertainment for the occasion a 1994 comedy starring Paul Newman, Nobody’s Fool! I reviewed it for my friends at the Washington Free Beacon:
Thanksgiving is a very American holiday, a family holiday, but people don’t go to church much these days, so it’s not exactly about faith. It’s easier to see Thanksgiving clearly if you look at a character like Paul Newman’s Sully, who seems to have nothing for which to give thanks, being a loser. That’s what Nobody’s Fool is all about. Sully gets a second chance, to grow old by becoming a grandfather & a father, putting aside his suffering. All his anger turns to comedy—he even learns to laugh at himself a little. His small success is also America’s success; it’s somehow about learning to deal with disappointment.
I also recorded a podcast conversation with my good friend Flagg Taylor, for those of you who’d like more than that very brief introduction!
Also the name of a great Kenny Loggins song; Happy Thanksgiving!
