Sohrab Ahmari & I had a lovely conversation about David Lynch, dreams & morality, Hollywood & social media: Mulholland Dr. The story of an ingenue, an innocent girl from a small town looking to make it in Hollywood & represent America in the FantasyLand of glamour turns into something out of horror—murder, corruption, losing one’s soul. Dreams & psychology, the cinematic art, & a hope that Americans can learn to see through their temptations!
Mulholland Dr. is a story about women—next we'll do the Lynch story about glamour, nostalgia, & men, Lost highway—funny how secrets travel.
Sohrab has a new book out which I recommend you pre-order, Tyranny, Inc: How Private Power Crushed American Liberty--and What to Do About It. Here’s the Penguin Random House link, here’s the Barnes & Noble, & here’s Amazon. I’ll be reviewing
Brilliant analysis of a great movie, although it had been many years since viewing the movie the scenes brought up in the conversation came vividly straight back to mind demonstrating how strongly the movie impresses upon the mind. A disturbingly pertinent conversation as modern society drifts into the the ever more surreal combination of technology and metaverse whilst simultaneously loosing connections to fundamental truths and agreed upon norms.
I'm glad you enjoyed it & thanks for the compliment. Yes, I think we all keep going back to this movie because of the power certain among the images have, we want to unravel them even though we realize it somehow shows disturbing things about our society...
