After the big week of writing on Cormac McCarthy on the occasion of his death, we can get to talking about Cormac McCarthy—one of the essays I recommended at the time, by Lafayette Lee (Twitter pseudonym friend) in IM made me think it’s time to do some podcasting about the impressive novel/film combination No Country For Old Men. Has there been such a successful combination recently, a prestigious & even popular novelist collaborating with equally prestigious & even popular filmmakers to near-universal applause?
We talked about America, especially transformations since the ‘60s, the West & the Western, the influence of North & South, the importance of thinking about violence & suffering in our times—the danger facing manliness.
There’s also another PoMoCon post on McCarthy’s mix of terror & hope, with reference to Dante—read Ethan’s thoughts here!
Also, don't miss Titus on the bad/unnecessary/yet-destined-given-Disney's-leadership new Indiana Jones over at Law and Liberty. https://lawliberty.org/dial-for-therapy/ He makes an interesting little Athens/Jerusalem point in there, and is right that you should go see the new Mission Impossible instead, which I enjoyed despite having long been Cruise-allergic and never that hot on action films. The new Wes Anderson film Asteroid City is also one to see on the big screen if you can. Nothing special there plot-wise, but visually simply amazing.
