Despite my love of rock music, I must agree it is in almost every way musically inferior to its roots. It seems to me that hip hop/rap is the only current music constantly growing and progressing. Rap's basically the perfect postmodern art form--hip hop's certainly the culture most great contemporary pop artists inhabit--but it also allows room for some conservatism as well as an unusual amounts of appreciation for classical ideas alongside postmodern ones. And hip hop seems to be the only current music culture that is truly culturally potent. I love many of the artists on your list though! Thanks for another thoughtful "Songbook" entry.
