Indeed, there is much for which to apologize. Purposeful voter disenfranchisement. Segregationist practices. Reproductive issues and health care. All “sides” have been very guilty of violating the “Spirit of 76” ethos.

I read this Substack because it represents a different viewpoint from many of the others I follow, which I appreciate. That said, this piece feels like it should be titled, “Why the left should apologize to the right on July 4th” because it doesn’t do much soul searching about what the right should also apologize for.

If we’re going down memory lane, this piece is worth adding to the list:

I know Jon, and I have to say that Covid fears weren’t entirely unfounded.

Hello Jon. I regard your last sentence with an "of course." Indeed, I would change the "entirely" to "largely." I certainly think the real grounds for fear became systematically hyped, and that some experts implicated in the likely construction of the Franken-virus aggressively, as well as another crew of media/science types who wanted to accuse Trump of inadequate vigilance, encouraged fear-porn over informing the public. But I have never liked it when a few of my allies on Covid-19 policy and Covid-19 vaccines dissident side have spoken of a "plandemic," or used certain advanced questions/areas-of-conceptual-uncertainty in virology to assert that Covid-19 is not a virus. Our friend John H. is in that latter group. I didn't even like it when otherwise great-on-this Van Morrison put the exclamation/question "when are you going to see, that this is all FAKE?" in his song "What's It Going to Take?" Nothing fake about people like Mr. Hawkins almost dying, even though there do remain legitimate questions about how Covid-19 deaths were classified as such, and very disturbing questions remain about how many Covid-19 patients who did pass away did so unnecessarily, due to the corrupt mandating of a single hospital protocol.

BTW, I tried to imply that it wasn't just many on the left who needed to apologize, but many of both parties in the managerial elite. And as the RFK Jr. candidacy makes clear, many of the most tireless dissidents on Covid-issues are on the left, or at least come from a left-background: CJ Hopkins, Mark Crispin Miller, Naomi Wolf, etc.
